Fictional example — a sample costing, worked out in full

⚠️ Fictional example, not a customer result. Every number below is the real output of RecipeMargin's own formulas on made-up inputs, with each input, formula, and result shown — so you can check the arithmetic before you buy. Margin here is food-cost margin only: it excludes labor, overhead, delivery, tax, and fees.

Made-up recipe: "Roast chicken dinner" — yield 25 servings per batch, menu price $18.00 per serving. Ingredients per batch: Chicken breast 12 lb × $3.49/lb = $41.88; Rice 5 lb × $1.20/lb = $6.00; Cream sauce 3 units × $4.00 = $12.00.

Cost per batch = $41.88 + $6.00 + $12.00 = $59.88. Cost per serving = $59.88 ÷ 25 = $2.3952. Food-cost % = $2.3952 ÷ $18.00 × 100 = 13.31%. Margin per serving = $18.00 − $2.3952 = $15.6048 (86.69%).

Made-up event: 60 guests. Batches needed = 60 ÷ 25, rounded up = 3 batches; leftover servings = 3 × 25 − 60 = 15. Buy quantities: Chicken breast 12 × 3 = 36 lb ($125.64); Rice 5 × 3 = 15 lb ($18.00); Cream sauce 3 × 3 = 9 units ($36.00). Planned cost = $59.88 × 3 = $179.64. Planned revenue = 60 × $18.00 = $1,080.00. Planned profit (food-cost only) = $1,080.00 − $179.64 = $900.36.

What RecipeMargin is — and is not

  • It is catering job costing: ingredient prices, recipes with yields, guest counts, purchasing quantities, food-cost margin scenarios, and planned-vs-actual comparison — all from explicit formulas shown on the tool page.
  • It is not a home recipe box. No meal planning, sharing, or nutrition data — that is a different product.
  • It is not a price source. Every price is one you entered. Nothing is looked up, and no AI output ever sets a price, quantity, or cost.
  • AI does names only. The optional AI button groups ingredient names and tidies capitalization. It is labeled AI-assisted, never verified, and when it is unavailable you get a clear notice and your list is untouched.
  • One workspace per account. No sharing or teams in v1, and no binary document import: paste text or upload CSV.
